Ruth and Esther were close friends. They met in Hawaii, and
stayed in touch when they went their separate ways. Ruth settled down and was
married. She was a very active, happy college student, but she settled into the
life of wife and mother of two. Over the years, Ruth and Esther stayed close. They wrote
often, and Esther likely heard all about Albert, John, and Marge. Sometime
probably in her early 40s, Ruth contracted breast cancer. In the late 1950s
early 60s, there was not the help for breast cancer that there is today. Unfortunately,
Ruth passed away from her cancer and left behind four important people: Esther,
Albert, John, and Marge. It is interesting to see these names all together,
because ultimately perhaps you can guess what happened.
Ruth and Esther had
been so close, writing all of the time. Albert decided to continue what his
wife had been doing, and Esther and Albert began writing. Esther was a woman
full of energy. She received her nursing degree from Yale, wrote a book, was a freelance
journalist in Germany after the second world war, and worked in Hawaii at a science
museum, likely before Hawaii was a state! She was quite the doer, but one day, her life changed.
She
received a letter asking if she would marry “us”: Albert, John, and Marge. She
said “yes”, and I gained a wonderful grandmother.
